About me

Blogger:
Unbeknownst to strangers who heard him sing in videoke, Crooner KR Guda did not have formal training in music, apart from a brief stint as a bass voice singing "Times of Your Life" during high school. Nowadays, he busies himself writing about politics and culture and studying photojournalism. As a journalist covering human rights issues, he is what can aptly be described by that John Berger quote: "Truly we writers are the secretaries of death." (Thanks to newly-sanctioned poet Teo Marasigan for that one)

UP Diliman, December 15

These are the scenes I saw when I went to the UP Diliman campus last Friday hoping to watch the Lantern Parade. Instead, I witnessed one of the biggest student demonstrations in campus since the mid-90s.

My account of that day in my other blog site.

With rage in their hearts, the students marched around the Academic Oval denouncing the tuition hike.

The students who marched were estimated to be around 5,000...

Some came all the way from the Manila and Los Baños campuses...

They were angry, defiant...

In front of Quezon Hall, the students razed an effigy of UP Diliman Chancellor Cao and UP President Roman

UP Diliman Student Council Chairperson Paolo Alfonso...

Alfonso declared that the fight has just began...

They are ready to continuously march to the streets until the administration rescinds its decision to hike UP tuition.

Recto Avenue, Demonstration against Political Killings and Charter Change, December 8, 2006

The ralliers led by Karapatan marched from Plaza Miranda in Quiapo to Recto Avenue, nearly reaching Mendiola before being blocked by a phlanax of cops.

Former political prisoner Donato Continente joins the protest march. During the program in Plaza Miranda, he read a "poem" by one Teo Marasigan.

Doris Cuario (rightmost) of Karapatan in Southern Tagalog urges her fellow activists to stand their ground.
